Have you been invited on your first boat trip and don't know how to behave? Don't worry, Voguer is here to help. Check out these tips on what to do and what to avoid so you can make a great impression. Let's go!
Arrive on time
Nothing ruins a boat trip more than delays. Get everything ready the day before and calculate how long it will take to reach the marina. Be punctual so you don't keep other passengers waiting and make the most of your time on the water.
Take off your shoes
For cleanliness, everyone should board the boat barefoot. If you're not comfortable with that, bring dedicated footwear for use on board and put them on only when boarding. Otherwise, all the dirt from outside will end up inside the boat.
Be careful about inviting a friend along
Boats have limited space and the number of occupants cannot exceed the maximum allowed. If you want to bring someone, ask the trip organizer first if it's okay to invite an extra person. Otherwise, save the invitation for another time -- great opportunities on board will come again.
Ask how the bathroom works
The bathrooms on yachts, sailboats, and speedboats have some tricks, especially when it comes to flushing the toilets. So before facing the embarrassment of having to ask for help, ask how everything works beforehand.
Avoid using tanning oil
Tanning oils are greasy and oily, and neither of these characteristics go well with the white hull of boats, much less with the upholstery. So avoid them while on board -- sunscreen alone is enough.
Watch out for excess luggage
Boats have limited space, so don't bring an absurdly large suitcase. Grab a small bag without wheels and pack only the essentials: swimwear, towels, personal hygiene items, sunscreen, and an extra set of dry clothes.
Save water
Freshwater tanks on boats are small, so avoid wasting water. Leaving the tap running while washing dishes or taking long showers is out of the question! Be mindful -- you're not alone on board.
Take seasickness medication
See a doctor and take the recommended seasickness medication before boarding. Avoid self-medication and follow proper guidelines to prevent any problems on board. Also, eat a light meal before leaving home. Avoid fried and greasy foods to keep your stomach settled.
Help with tasks
On a boat, there's always something to help with, whether it's cleaning or holding and tying a rope. So as much as possible, try to help, or at least offer. Just be careful not to create risky situations on board -- in other words, do what you know, and if you don't know, don't be ashamed to ask the captain. They always know what's best.
Have fun, but in moderation
Enjoy every moment of the trip, but remember to drink responsibly. Alcohol and water don't mix well, so eat well and stay mindful of your consumption to ensure your own safety and that of others.
By following these simple tips, you'll be ready to enjoy a perfect day at sea as an exemplary passenger. Always remember to enjoy the moment and respect the marine environment so everyone can have a unique and pleasant experience. Have a great trip!
